Personal Statement
At the age of 10, I came to England from India. Adapting to a different culture was arduous.
Struggle was on many fronts, grasping the education system, getting used to a new culture and
to a new language. Yet these challenges drove me ever closer to the love of Mathematics.
My secondary education started off with a shock, I was placed in the bottom group for
Mathematics. This made me ever more desperate to prove to my teachers, my parents and more
importantly me, that I am a capable Mathematician. This pursuit was tough yet gratifying. As a
result of this persistent effort over a couple of years, I have gradually progressed and
achieved what I wanted and got into the top group.
This knowledge that I gained by learning Mathematics, I had put to good use whilst I taught
at Kumon, a teaching centre for Maths and English. This experience opened my eyes on how young
children approach learning, their curiosity and their energy was engaging. It also taught me
to be more patient and that with dedicated effort one can learn difficult concepts. For me the
best way of learning is to learn like a child.
During the summer I worked with Romans (Real-estate Business) in their Finance
Department. One of the interesting things that I observed was how they predicted and recorded
when their customers would pay their mortgage. They have poured through lots of data like
their past history of clearing debt, financial job status, and the way this data was validated
through telephone calls and credit reports. They had been focusing on developing the business
whilst still managing risks for their business, it was very interesting to learn about risk
management that they do on a day to day basis and to know to what extent Mathematics, Statistics
and Computing helps them in making their important decisions. This has helped me in firming up
on my career plans.
I have done ICT at GCSE and have learnt tools such as Excel and Access and these help in
recording and analysing data. I have taken my mother's help to learn 'C' and of 'C++'
programming languages. Knowledge and expertise of computing is very important for career as
prospective employers look for candidates who can easily deal with these tools and technologies to deliver their day to day business functions effectively.
Maths, Further Maths, Physics and Economics were my chosen subjects at A Level. I have chosen
Maths and Further Maths as most businesses use mathematics and statistics to take articulated
business decisions on growth, risks and customer satisfaction. Economy at Micro and Macro
level does impact on all businesses, and a sound understanding of Economics is very important
for a career in Business. This was the reason for my choice of Economics in A Level. I
believe Maths and Economics combination will give me the required fundamental skills to gain a head start in the competitive career that I want to go into.
I have also completed a course in GCSE, Level 2 Certificate in Personal Finance, in which
I achieved a grade 'A'. This gave me a basic understating of Money Management Solutions and
Personal Finance Management.
In addition, I am a determined and ambitious individual. Apart from my academic pursuits I have
learnt swimming for more than 4 years. I have learnt to play badminton for 2 years and
achieved 2nd place in mixed doubles in 'Kreedamela 2013'; a sports event, which shows that I
can stay calm in pressure situations. I have also been pursuing guitar for a year and reached
Grade 1 and currently am working towards grade 2.
My interests and skills are appropriately aligned to pursue a career where my Mathematical
skill would be of paramount importance, be it Applied Mathematics (Statistics, Actuarial
Science) or Computing. Mathematics and Statistics are heavily used by organisations to plan,
to forecast, and to make important business decisions, whereas Computing enables organisations
to record and analyse business data to help make those important business decisions.
